Kiambu senator Kimani Wamatangi has raised fears over alleged re-emergence of illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks in some parts of the county.

The senator claims that illicit brewing is slowly re-emerging in the county.

Addressing locals at Tinga’ng’a town center on Wednesday, the Kiambu senator alleged that illicit brewers are colluding with chiefs to brew and sale illegal alcoholic drinks.

The Kiambu senator cited Ruiru, Kiambu Town, Githunguri and Limuru as areas where the illicit brews are re-emerging.

“The police and local administration officials must re-launch and intensify the crackdown on illicit brews and illegal alcoholic drinks,” he said.

The senator claimed that young people are once again being lured into alcoholism.

Wamatangi urged the Kiambu county commissioner to coordinate and fight illicit brews saying that it threatens the future of young people and economy of the county.

“The county commissioner and other relevant government agencies must actively intensify the fight against brews and take legal action against government officers aiding brewers,” he added.

There have been concerns over re-emergence of licit brews in some parts of Kiambu with anti-drug crusaders urging the government to intensify the war against illicit brews and narcotics.

Two years ago President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a nationwide crackdown on illicit brewers an exercise that was termed successful. Claims of the brews being re-introduced are causing fears among Kenyans.

Speaking in Thika on Saturday last week, Kiambu anti-drug crusader Gladys Chania said that drug abuse among youths in Kiambu is still a big problem.

She called on the national and county government to initiate more campaigns against drug abuse.

Chania also called on the government to intensify the crackdown on drug trafficking across the country.
