The Kenyan public is coming to terms with the Solai Dam tragedy that claimed the lives of upwards of 30 people Wednesday night.
As expected, the tragic story has attracted the coverage of not only the local media but also the international media given the scale of the destruction and loss of life that occurred.
American top newspapers, The New York Times and the Washington Post were not left behind in covering the tragedy.
Kenya dam bursts, killing at least 41 and sweeping away houses in ‘sea of water’, the Washington Post's headline read.
''A loud bang was the first sign that something was about to go wrong in Kenya's Nakuru County on Wednesday night. Then came massive waves of water, which crashed through farmland, swept away hundreds of houses and killed at least 41 people,'' the Washington Post reported.
''Kenya Dam Break Wipes Out Villages, Killing Dozens,'' the New York Times headline screamed.
''Forty people were reported missing, and about 500 families were displaced, government and aid officials said. Four people were hospitalized, and 42 others were treated for injuries, Fred Matiang’i, Kenya’s secretary for the interior, said at a news conference on Thursday. The casualty figures rose repeatedly on Thursday as search and rescue missions continued, and officials cautioned that it could be some time before they knew the full toll,'' the New York Times wrote in its report.
The Guardian Newspaper led the British Newspapers' coverage of the Solai Dam tragedy.
