Education CS Fred Mating'i
Education CS Fred Matiangi has directed all International schools to start teaching Kiswahili and Kenyan History from September this year.
This follows a government directive that basic Education be taught in International Schools that do not follow the 8-4-4 curriculum.
Education CS Fred Matiang’i said on Thursday the subjects will be taught up to grade 9.
This is equivalent of Form Two under the 8-4-4 system.
Matiangi gave the directive on Thursday while speaking during the 20th annual presentation at Braeside High School, Nairobi.
According to the CS, the move will be beneficial to children born to Kenyan parents who enroll in international schools.
He said the children need to learn Kenya’s history as well as how to read and write in Kiswahili.
Matiang’i further stated that international schools must also ensure their teachers are registered and accredited by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
“We want to ensure that all schools have people who have been properly prepared to handle children,” he said.
He assured that the government will simplify the process of approving expatriate teachers once schools make applications to the relevant authorities.
