Internet users have been advised to browse via secure websites particularly when submitting sensitive information online, such as credit card details.
Internet security solutions company, ESET East Africa Country Manager Teddy Njoroge has urged those enrolled for online banking or shopping never to use unsecured WI-FI.
“Never click on links, especially emails asking for confidential information such as personal or banking details unless you are absolutely sure that it is authentic,” said Njoroge
He said if in doubt, open a new browser window and type the URL that you are familiar with into the address bar instead.
This is after Information Communication Technology experts revealed that Kenya faces a potentially huge cyber-insecurity problem with at least 3000 successful or failed attacks recorded every month.
The experts said the insecurity is propagated by phishing which involves cyber criminals sending out warnings to users advising them to change their passwords then redirecting them to fake website where they harvest their personal details.
Often the phishing is delivered via emails and it is an improved version over the old methods that relied on phone calls and physical letter scams revealed the experts.
ICT experts are advising individuals and organizations to browse via a secure website to avoid manipulation by cyber criminals.
