Kisii schools have been urged to include parents and students in school management to tame cases of school unrests.
Speaking yesterday at a church service in Kisii, Prof Willie Onkoba said the main cause of student unrest are the dissatisfactory rules and programmes imposed on them.
He said a large number of the students are dissatisfied with rules imposed on them without their consultation yet they were the ones affected by the rules.
“When we treat our students as prisoners and want them to do everything we tell them, this does not auger well with them. They are youth and ought to be rebellious," he said.
He added that through forums where parents, students, and teachers are involved in the making of rules, there will be more satisfaction than when only teachers make the rules themselves.
He adds that although the programmes teachers’ roll out such as tuition in the evenings or morning hours may be beneficial it is not always received well by students. Some view it as an infringement on their freedom and overworking them.
“We should not always impose rules and regulations, programmes without consulting the students and also parents. You can imagine a scenario where both the student and parent is not satisfied with the ideas, either programmes which include tuition and remedial classes which include extra costs. Parents don’t always want to argue out with the teachers but express their dissatisfaction with their children something that is very dangerous,” said Onkoba.
He said before such programmes are rolled out, they should ensure they receive the students opinion on this because they too have their own schedules to follow, they have plans and because of poor communication within the school management they may express their dissatisfaction in a destructive way like what we have seen in the recent cases of school unrests.
