Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) has cautioned irrigation farmers in Garissa county against illegal connection of water.
GAWASCO public relations officer Ali Awdol decried rising cases of illegal water connections in the county.
Mr. Awdol said that it is illegal for residents to connect to water supply without the company’s authorization.
He further said that the water company is carrying out a disconnection exercise on commercial and private premises.
Mr. Awdol said investigations have been launched on such farmers and business owners adding that those found to be engaging in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted.
The public relations officers added that the water company is losing a lot of money as a result of illegal connections.
“We are determined to crack down on illegal water tapping. We will be going for irrigation farmers that have illegally connected. Let the culprits involved know that we are coming for them.”
“We will also disconnect all illegal water pipelines all in an effort to bring sanity to the water sector. Everyone needs to pay for the water they use to ensure efficiency,” he said.
The massive water loss due to illegal connection is what to blame for the frequent water crisis witnessed in the county, added the officer.
