About 1,000 residents drawn from Irungu area in Kisii Township ward are set to benefit from piped water for farming and domestic use after decades of struggling to get the commodity.
Speaking while touring the area on Tuesday Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Richard Tong’i said the residents have been facing a lot of problems as they used to walk long distances to fetch water.
“The county doesn’t have any water shortage but the distance is not favorable and convenient and in the next few weeks we will ensure each household has water," he added.
The legislator added that he expect the project that will help wipe out high levels of poverty in the area as residents will use sprinklers to irrigate their farms. The project is expected to be completed by September this year.
He said over 800 households will be connected to piped water, adding that the water will be enough to irrigate the area as well as for domestic use.
“It has been a long struggle as the County Government failed to fund the project. The struggle that women go through traveling for over five hours to get water will be over after we complete the project,” he added.
Residents too lauded the project, saying they will at least engage in viable economic activities to uplift their livelihoods.
