Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro. His job is up for grabs by three seasoned lawyers who seek to replace him. [Photo: kenya-today.com]Lobbying for the job of Senate Speaker is said to be in high gear with three names already being tossed around. The 12th Parliament is scheduled to convene next Tuesday with the first agenda being to elect the two speakers of the bicameral house. Among them is Nakuru Senator-elect and former Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Susan Kihika who is said to be keen on becoming the first woman Senate Speaker or Deputy Speaker. If she is elected, her Nakuru Senate seat will fall vacant and a by-election will have to be held later to replace her. However, this will not be the case if she is elected the Deputy Speaker."There is no one who has been tried and tested than I have been. I was tried by fire and I somehow managed. I survived to lead a successful assembly in the legislative work," Kihika was quoted by the Star on Tuesday. The Senate deputy speaker position is vacant as its holder, outgoing Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura, lost to Irungu Kang’ata in the August 8 General Election. There is also a push to replace Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro with either Kihika, former CIC chairman Charles Nyachae or outgoing Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga, all of them who are seasoned lawyers.
