US president-elect Donald Trump weathered a tight race to deny America its first-ever female president.
Trump, a Republican, was declared the winner of the fiercely-contested race after beating his competitor, Democrat Hillary Clinton in the results announced early Wednesday morning.
Hillary who did not address her supporters, however, called the President-elect to congratulate him and also concede defeat.
"She congratulated us -- it is about us -- on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign," said Trump as quoted by AFP.
"Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very sincerely," he added.
He sent a reconciliatory message saying he will be President for all Americans following the election that has left a sharp division among citizens.
The world is now watching if the super power will have another female presidential candidate, who, hopefully, might become a resident of the White House.
