Recent cases include Patrick Ekeng, a Cameroonian who plays for Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest and Bernard Ribeiro of Brazil who plays for Friburgence in the amateur league in Brazil.

Both players were 26 years when they met their death.

The main concern however, is the capacity of Kenyan football clubs to handle such cases when they occur.

In Ekeng's and Ribeiro's cases, lack of proper equipment at the field during the matches were faulted for the demise of the professional players.

In Kenya, the situation is even worse as most football clubs lack professional medical practitioners and equipment.

Similarly, the Football Kenya Federation has failed to provide ambulances fully equipped at the field before kick-off of matches.

The chairman of FKF Nick Mwendwa recently said lack of funds was crippling the provision of basic medical care at club level.

The question disturbing many people is 'What if a player collapsed today during a match?'

The federation together with the government should come up with funds and provide the right medical requirements to the football teams before tragedy strikes during football matches.
