Islam is the dominant religion in Mombasa.
However, the Muslim community has been marginalised since independence.
A good number of them are yet to test the fruits accrued from the 50-plus years Kenya has been independent.
Their little numbers and the perceived low economic viability has made many politicians to ignore them.
This group has lacked a leader with a national outlook for ages but they have found one in Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
He has a national fan-base and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed believes Joho is the undisputed Muslim leader.
“Joho is the undisputed Muslim leader and has shown the leadership, determination and courage to snatch the most coveted seat away from Jubilee. The Muslims in Kenya have been marginalised for over 50 years. Joho will become the Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Junior in championing the rights of Muslims," said Junet.
The crowned Muslim king will have to advocate for social change in the Coast region.
By emulating the 20th Century Martin Luther King Jnr and following in the footsteps of Malcolm X, Joho will be a relief to the Kenyan Muslims.
“He will be the Governor of Mombasa for two terms, he has been an assistant minister, and his performance has been impressive. We have no doubt Joho is well rounded and capable of addressing most of the challenges confronting Muslims,” said Junet as quoted by The Star.
