When you mention Eldoret, what comes to the mind of a Literature enthusiast are Eldoret Poets Association, One-Night Stand, The Genesis and The gathering literary events.
When you mention Kisumu, what comes to the mind of a literature enthusiast are Poetic Hour, Poetry Battle, Lakeside Poetry and street poetry and spoken word events.
When you mention the Coastal city of Mombasa, what one remembers is the One-Mic Stand poetry and spoken word event.
Of course Nairobi, being the capital city is awashed with numerous literary events, in just one weekend, literary enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. We have the month Fatuma’s voice event at Pawa 254. We have the weekly poetry event dubbed Poetry After Lunch (PAL) happening at the Kenya National Theatre every Thursday.
In Nairobi, we have the monthly SEMA ANIKA forum which brings together artists of different disciplines from poets, spoken word artists, musicians and rappers.Book lovers and authors are not left behind. Literary Cross-roads, Book clubs by Text Book Centre are just a few book discourse events happening around town.
Nairobi also takes care of fine artists. What with art exhibitions, plays and panel discussions drawing together reknown artists, writers and professionals in the Literature field.
When you mention Machakos County, nothing comes to mind. At least as far as literature is concerned. Where are the poetry events in Machakos County? Where are the book clubs in Machakos County? Where are the art exhibitions in Machakos County? Does it mean that we do not have creative writers, poets, authors, artists in Machakos County or are they operating under the water?
It is high time for Machakos Literature community to come and fight for the national and international space. They should not let other Counties to steal the show while they lad behind.
