Ken Obura must be a worried man. The outspoken Kisumu Central legislator is finding himself in uncharted territory as he positions himself to defend his seat in 2017.
The controversial lawmaker is seen by his constituents as a 'traitor' and so does the party that sponsored him to parliament in 2013, ODM.
He has in the past been accused by the leaders close to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga of working with the Kenyatta-led Jubilee coalition, claims he refutes.
He however, managed to ride out the storm but today, he is at it again.
Mr Obura is among few ODM MPs from Raila's backyard in Nyanza, who attended the 'prayer' rally for the victims at Afraha stadium on Saturday when the Cord brigade was holding a parallel rally in Kibera.
This was a clear indication that the youthful lawmaker is warming up to the Jubilee coalition.
However, his effort to defend the seat on a different ticket is not promising if the mood on the ground is anything to go by.
The residents claim that he has already written his political obituary in a region that plays scorched-earth politics.
James Otieno and Doreen Akinyi who are residents of Kisumu Central constituency are convinced that the MP has lost the support on the ground and will face a daunting task if he is to defend his seat in 2017, a thought that is shared by Robinson Oyieke who claims that the legislator is a 'traitor' for working with an 'enemy.'
"How can you break ranks with the party that took you to parliament?" asked Mr Oyieke who added that the lawmaker will face it rough in 2017.
To Ken Obura, 2017 will be a litmus taste to his political career. Will he overcome it?
