Machakos Women Representative Dr Susan Musyoka has launched a programme to distribute free sanitary pads to 320 primary schools, all having her face printed on the package.

Dr Musyoka said providing each girl child with a pack of sanitary pads will go a long way in ensuring that they get a better education. "Without sanitary pads, girls can miss up to a week of school every month, and experience health issues.

Some girls skip school, do not participate in sports, or would be too embarrassed to sit next to another learner due to the fear that she might mess up her uniform," she noted.

The distribution which kicked off on Tuesday is done through the National Government Affirmative Action. She added that distribution will be accompanied by a comprehensive awareness raising intervention dealing with issues relating to sexuality, adolescence, hygiene and the rights of the girl-child.
