Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya has declared his support for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto in the forthcoming general election.
He said the government has been of great help to the people of Kwale by developing the county and it was no doubt a time to shift political lanes and join a team destined to continue helping locals.
However, Mvurya's decision comes barely two weeks after he was endorsed by ODM leader Raila Odinga for Kwale gubernatorial re-election in 2017.
The decision by Mvurya has left many people shocked. Does this mean that Mvurya has betrayed Raila? Will his decision affect his re-election in 2017?
Many political analysts believe that Mvurya will not be re-elected because he has decided to play unfair politics.
They say that the Coast region is still in full support of Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) and he (Mvurya) will not make it in 2017.
Speaking at a rally in Msambweni attended by both President Kenyatta and Ruto, Mvurya said it was only logical to support a political group that is set to benefit one in the long run.
"President Uhuru, you are in the process of forming a rejuvenated Jubilee Party and we want you to know that if you include us in your agenda, then we will support you in 2017.
Your government has brought great developments to the people of Kwale and it is because of that that we have decided to back you for 2017 polls," said Mvurya.
His decision has not been received well by ODM officials in the region. The officials believe Mvurya stopped being an ODM member long time ago and had been waiting for an opportune moment to switch political allegiance.
The officials have promised to ensure Mvurya is not re-elected in 2017 as Kwale governor for 'betraying' ODM party.
This makes the Kwale political atmosphere tense as the 2017 elections are around the corner.
