There was a time when Nakuru town was billed the cleanest town in Kenya. That time elapsed and almost got erased in peoples’ minds as the town gradually became dirty.

Garbage littering allover had spoiled the good town name. A bad reputation for the green town that is popular to revellers had set in.

Street vendors had invaded all street making cleaning a hard-work.

However, when the Nakuru county government came into power, it has put efforts in place to reclaim the lost glory.

The town is far better than others say Nairobi and Kisumu going by media reports where heaps of garbage have been a concern to residents.

Despite the political repercussions, vendors were moved out of the streets in Nakuru town.

The county government also initiated beautification activities.

Walking along major streets in the town, it is hardly to encounter a heap of trash. The town is cleaner than two years ago.

Footpaths in most streets are now being tarmacked with most of them even in residential areas having street lights.

Whether the town will surely reclaim its lost glory of being the cleanest town in East Africa is a matter of time.

And with the 2017 elections beckoning, disorder may reign.

Streets will once again be filled with scores of unmanageable hawkers like before.

“We hope this time round politicians will not have their supporters put their wares anywhere or anyhow without considering the cleanness of Nakuru,” said Jane Wachira who runs a business in the town.
