Former Kenya School of Law President Aggrey Mwamu has defended a plan by the Opposition coalition NASA to set up a parallel tallying centre during the next general elections.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mwamu argued that the Opposition had not contravened the law in its plan.

“There is no clause in the Constitution that states that the Opposition or any Kenyan cannot have a parallel tallying centre to that of IEBC,’’ he noted.

Mwamu added that every Kenyan was at liberty to monitor elections and tally election results.

He, however, observed that it is only the electoral agency IEBC mandated to declare official results and election winners.

“The only thing that individuals or parties cannot do is to declare official results because that decree is vested in the IEBC,” he said.

NASA's plan to have its own poll centre has come under sharp criticism especially from the Jubilee Party, with the ruling party warning that the plan could throw the country into chaos and violence.
