With barely six months remaining to the next general election, Mombasa and Coast region politics in general is taking shape with a new wave of defection sweeping across the area.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga and his deputy Hassan Joho is falling victim to the over dynamic political landscape in the region.
The defection wave which was set into motion by Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung'aro and his accomplices nearly two years ago, is back on the cards with Mombasa Deputy Governor Hazel Katana recently bolting out of the party in favour of Jubilee.
Just four days ago, Ali Mbogo, who is vying for the Kisauni parliamentary seat decided to walk out of the party on grounds that he will be 'shortchanged' during the nomination exercise in favour of the incumbent Rashid Bedzimba.
As far as defections are concerned, the ODM Coast Chapter has witnessed more compared to other regions, with at least eight politicians switching their allegiance, with Jubilee and Wiper being the greatest beneficiaries.
As such, the party is facing its turbulent times in the wake of the discontent, a scenario that is threatening to undermine its electoral ambitions of solidifying the votes to springboard Raila Odinga into the Presidency.
The current state of affairs has turned the region into a swing bloc even as Jubilee Party that hardly had a following in the region in 2013, gaining ground thanks to the support from the ODM splinter group.
As for Wiper, the good news is that it's still a member of the opposition NASA coalition.
The orange colour that has reigned in the region is slowly being replaced by red and blue, which are the Jubilee and Wiper colours.
