What began as an ideological rift between the socialist-leaning Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and the capitalist-oriented Jomo Ng'engi Kenyatta has been passed genetically to their children and their children's children.
It should be noted that the current rift between Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta and Raila Amolo Odinga has, arguably, nothing to do with the two individuals.
Theirs is an extension of the bitter war between old Jomo and old Jaramogi.
While Kenyatta was in prison in Kapenguria, old Jaramogi is said to have refused the position of Prime Minister offered to him by the colonial government insisting that there would be no self-rule for the black people if political prisoners like Kenyatta would not be released.
When Kenyatta was released, Jaramogi allowed him to be Kenya's first Prime Minister.
This alliance and good relationship would be broken as a result of the West versus East conflict and the resultant cold war that tore many colonies and African Countries into pro or anti the two ideologies.
It appears that the mistrust sowed during Jomo's time has been genetically handed down to the later progeny in Uhuru and Raila.
This time, however, there is no ideologic rift between the two; It is more of a sibling rivalry with Raila not being happy that his younger brother has taken away his birthright.
