If you pass through Makadara estate in Athi River town around 10 am in the morning, you will not miss to see a group of young boys and girls practicing some dance moves in front of Deliverance Church.
They are bold and energetic. For those who are not aware, these boys and girls make up the CHRIST SEED dance crew, one of the hottest dance crew in Athi River town.They have some of the best dance moves and styles you will ever come across.
Started just a few months ago by two performing artists going by the names Flexx and Allan Mwendwa, the group has since grown to accommodate 12 dancers. Out of the 12 dancers, 10 are boys and 2 are girls. The group consists of teenagers and according to their leader Allan, they started the dance crew with the sole purpose of nurturing talents among Athi River teenagers.
Allan used to dance for another dance crew in Kitengela before he decided to team up with Flexx, a choreographer, to start their own “home dance crew” at Makadara estate in Athi River town.
“Youths get into drugs and theft when they are idle. So tulianzisha hii dance crew to keep youths out of drugs and away from outlawed groups,” Flexx said.
The crew is composed of many high school students. They are on mid-term holidays and it keeps them engaged.
The dance group has faced a challenge of unscrupulous middle men or brokers who parade themselves as event organizers and after an event, they walk away with all the money, leaving the crew high and dry.
Currently, they are rehearsing for an upcoming talent auditions. Dubbed “Mavoko Talent Search”, the event is scheduled to take place on the 30th of June, 2018 in Athi River town. The area MP Patrick Makau will be in attendance. The best in each category will walk home with goodies. There will be rapping, spoken word, singing, dancing, art exhibition and much more.
From the auditions, the selected groups will be attending the Mavoko Mega Festival scheduled to happen on the 19th of August in Makadara grounds. There are other dance crews in Athi River town like the notorious Legacy Dancers, but will they beat the new kids on the block Christ Seed? Let us wait and see.
