Renowned politician and Kisumu Town Member of Parliament Robert Ouko was found dead at Got Alila, only a few miles from his rural home in Koru, Muhoroni, on February 13, 1990.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs in retired President Daniel Moi's government had disappeared from his home the night before, with one of her workers alleging that he was taken away in a white car, before being discovered by villagers the next day.
Forensic evidence conducted by Scotland Yard detectives later indicated that the leader was killed by a shot to the head. His right leg had been broken in two places and his body partially burned.
The evidence further suggested that the shot might have been discharged at the same place, and though the bullet was never found, matches, a torch, and a fuel jerrycan were found near the scene.
According to the lead investigator, Superintendent John Troon, in a Standard publication dated 2016, the evidence pointed at the same government in which the minister served, with the then Interior Permanent Secretary Hezekiah Oyugi topping the list of suspects.
''Hezekiah Oyugi was the mastermind of the minister’s death. He was the triggerman, but the PS was not working alone,'' he said.
Responding to a question on whether the then President Daniel Arap Moi was unaware of the happenings, Troon was quoted by a Standard publication stating that: ''He is the president and his Foreign Affairs Minister is murdered, what do you think?''
In the interview, Troon recalled having sufficient information that Oyugi had been in Kisumu the night the minister died, claims he (Oyugi) initially denied, but were confirmed by Francis Cheruiyot, a telephonist at Rongo office near Ouko's farm.
Cheruiyot said that he had seen Oyugi and three other people pass near the office aboard a white car on two occasions on the same day at 6:00am.
Also implicated and arrested were three other persons, including Jonah Anguka, then Nakuru District Commissioner, who was confined for 1,000 days, and was the only one who stood trial, before being granted asylum in the US, with Oyugi was being released after two weeks.
The body was officially discovered by the police on 16th February as the villagers did not report their finding, but the case is yet to be concluded.
