Opposition chief Raila Odinga, has earned himself marks for calling off the protests which were becoming a nightmare to many, particularly families who lost their loved ones during the demonstrations.

But what could be the political motive behind the calling off of the anti IEBC protests?

Criticism from Western diplomats

On Tuesday, 12 foreign envoys condemned the demonstrations when three Kenyans who were demonstrating were shot dead by police. “Violence will not resolve the issues regarding the future of the IEBC or ensure the 2017 elections are free and credible. We strongly urge all Kenyans to come together to de-escalate the situation and to resolve their differences, taking every opportunity for inclusive dialogue,” said the envoys.

Raila wanted to strengthen international relations

Raila has always been regarded as the father of democracy. It would be ironical for the icon to lead demonstrations that result in deaths and destruction of properties.

Respond to calls from religious leaders

From time to time, religious leaders have been trying to resolve the conflicts between the Cord and the government. By calling off, the Opposition wanted to prove that they can work well with other institutions in this case, religious organisation.

Police brutality

The level of police brutality meted out on the protesters was uncalled for. Both the local and the international community have condemned the manner in which the police handled the protests. On Monday this week, three people died during the demos in Kisumu and Siaya counties.
