Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has blamed the anti-riot police for using excessive force to deal with Monday's anti-IEBC protesters.
Speaking in Narok County where he was popularising his Pesa Mashinani Patriotic Party, the vocal Bomet county boss said every Kenyan has a right to peacefully demonstrate and picket as stipulated in the constitution.
"It was unnecessary for the police to deal harshly with other Kenyans while enjoying their rights. Although we don't support looting of property and vandalising businesses, Kenyans should freely and peacefully demonstrate," said Ruto.
He expressed the need to re-constitute the Isaak Hassan led commission but through constitutional procedures.
" If Kenyans are not satisfied with the IEBC commissioners, the team should be disbanded and another one formed. We want an independent and a fair referee," the Governor insisted.
On Monday, several Kenyans were injured after Cord leaders led protests to express their displeasure with the commissioners. The actions by the police have received wide criticisms from human rights activists, the clergy and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).
