Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has said the best time for Kenya to hold a referendum aimed at amending the 2010 Constitution is in 2020.
Ruto said the country has just come out of an election and it would be improper to throw Kenyans into another poll bearing in mind the divisive nature of Kenyan politics.
The former county chief who was speaking during an interview on Citizen television on Tuesday said he fully supports the proposed Constitutional amendment but added that the country needs to focus on development first.
"I am in support of the referendum because I strongly believe there is a section that needs to be amended," he said.
"But this is not the right time. We are an endlessly politicking country and we really need to rethink our strategies. Let's give ourselves time to work and develop the country, we can have the referendum three years after the August election."
Opposition chief Raila Odinga is the chief architect of the proposed Constitutional amendment and he has support from the opposition as well as a section of Jubilee-allied politicians.
There are claims that the proposed amendment is meant to create more positions in government and Raila may be one of the beneficiaries of one of the new posts.
Deputy President William Ruto is against the amendment.
