Ishaqbini Community conservancy, the only conservancy in Northern Kenya and home of the Hirola antelope, an endangered species in the World is fast going down the drain and needs an immediate facelift and intervention from conservationists.
With political and clan-based differences, the existence of the conservancy is at stake, drawing concerns from interested quarters. Illiterate elders making part of the conservancy management committee are on record wanting to milk the project as their cash cow.
It is now upon the area residents to stand and work for the interest of the Ishaqbini Conservancy for the sake of the Hirola antelope.
If the conservancy collapses, many people will lose jobs and even the county government will lose revenue collected from domestic and external tourists flocking to see the Hirola antelope.
The recently constituted Ishaqbini board of members was not balanced and gender disparity was not considered while members were handpicked by a clan for nine consecutive years, which is contrary to the rules and regulations guiding conservancies.
