Meru Governor Peter Munya now wants communities that constitute GEMA to support his bid to vie for the presidency in 2022.
According to Munya, the mantle has been held by the Kikuyu community for far too long, and it is time it went to Meru.
Gema is made up of Agikuyu, Embu and Meru communities, with only the Gikuyu have held the presidency seat.
As part of their launch in the vast Meru County, the PNU brigade led by Governor Munya took its campaigns to Nkubu area, which is considered Senator Kiraitu Murungi’s stronghold.
The main agenda was seeking votes for August elections, with the PNU team saying they have a team that can be elected from the top seat to the MCA level.
His entry into Kiraitu’s area was punctuated by fear, that his rally would have been disrupted.
“Utufungie ama usitufungie barabara, watu wa meru wameamua ya kwamba tarehe nane mwezi wa nane gavana wa Meru ni Peter Munya, (Even if you block the roads and do all sorts of things, Meru people have decided its Peter Munya,” said the incumbent governor.
There were incidences of protests before the rally, as unidentified people barricaded the road, burning tyres and blocking Munya to access South Meru, where Nkubu is located.
The situation was however calmed by police officers and the rally went on as earlier planned.
“Tuanataka hao waalikua wanakata miti na kuiweka kwa barabara na kuchoma washikwe na wachukuliwe hatua kali,” said Munya.
At the rally, Munya took a swipe at his opponent, Kiraitu Murungi, accusing him of being behind the barricading of the road.
”The time for mzee Kiraitu, kama wazee wengine wa zamani, imefika. We are saying 2022, Mount Kenya East will shine” he added.
The two area gearing up for a political battle in the August elections, with the county among those that will experience a serious battle.
