Newly appointed Chief Justice David Maraga has promised to address the backlog of cases in courts as well as and automate court proceedings.

Justice Maraga who was sworn-in at State House, Nairobi said he will also fight graft in the Judiciary.

"I will reduce the backlog and become more accountable. I will fight corruption as part of a new culture at the Judiciary. I will institutionalise the war against corruption to become part of the culture and strengthen the office of the Ombudsman," Maraga said as quoted by the Star.

Maraga who is now also the president of the Supreme Court, said he strive to make the Judiciary a better institution.

"Burden of delivery is high on me as Chief Justice, but I aim to succeed. When we allow institutions to thrive, they will do what is right," Maraga said.

The first assignment will be to swear in the nine-member panel that will recruit new commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne Amadi also witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He hails from Nyamira County and is a staunch Christian.

Maraga was nominated by the Judicial Service Commission on September 22, and on Tuesday evening, the National Assembly adopted the report from the Justice Affairs and Legal Committee which had vetted him.
