A fierce political battle is expected in Yatta constituency ahead of next year’s general election where political heavy weights have declared interest in the parliamentary seat.
The incumbent, Francis Mwangangi is expected to defend his seat, amidst growing opposition from outspoken former area MP Charles Kilonzo as well as a former Chief Officer in Machakos County government, Lemi Muia.
Mwangangi, who is a first time MP, has been fighting off claims of poor management of the constituency development fund (CDF) by his competitors, who have been telling voters that they are ready to offer alternative leadership.
But the MP has dismissed the allegations, teaming his critics as 'political idlers' out to seek cheap publicity. Charles Kilonzo, who analysts have described as a seasoned politician, having been in parliament before, has bounced back to hunt for votes across the vast constituency.
Kilonzo is respected for his eloquence in House debates. On the other hand, Lemi, who recently resigned from Governor Alfred Mutua’s government, has also hit the ground through his much popularized ‘Youth Power Movement.’
A PhD candidate at the University of Nairobi, Lemi built his name during his days as the Chief Officer for Water, where he initiated numerous water projects in the semi-arid constituency.
However, it remains to be seen if more aspirants will pop up and what likely impact they may bring into the prevailing political climate.
