Residents of Kisii County have accused the county leadership of working with MCAs to award tenders to people close to the elected representatives or the county leadership.

Speaking at Itumbe region on Tuesday during a burial ceremony, they faulted the county government for allegedly being biased in the awarding of tenders, raising questions in the manner at which people who given contracts on relationship basis.

They urged the county leadership to make awarding of contracts transparent besides emphasizing of regional balance.

“We are all aware that it is difficult for the poor and underprivileged to get contracts from the county government despite having all necessary requirements. Regional balancing is also a problem and we have evidence that MCAs have hijacked the contracting by rewarding their supporters or themselves,” said Francis Obiero.

They threatened to hold peaceful demonstrations against the regime of Governor James Ongwae besides calling for investigations from the Senate towards awarding of tenders.

“We will hold demonstrations if the status quo remains. The county government has to come clear on this. We also call upon the Senate to execute its mandate by investigating skewed tendering processes,” added Willis Ong’eri.

However, Protus Moindi defended the county leadership and asked residents to do thorough investigations before making such serious claims.

“Those are very serious claims and as a member of the assembly, I am not even aware of it. Let us do thorough investigations before making such claims,” he said.
