Nominated Senator Emma Mbura said her first attempt to vie for the Rabai parliamentary seat in the just-concluded general election showed Kilifi residents that women can also lead.
Speaking during an interview with The Star on Tuesday, Mbura said she contested against her male rivals to fight the notion that women in the county have little knowledge about leadership.“I managed to erase the notion that Mijikenda women cannot lead. There is a stereotype that women in Kilifi think leadership belongs to men. I’m relaxed. I have no pressure. This is politics. Some lose, others win,” she said.Mbura who vied on a Maendeleo Chap Chap ticket, termed her loss in the polls as part of the learning process in politics. She accused her rivals of engaging in propaganda which she said cost her the seat.“They said I stay in Mombasa and will abandon Rabai people once they elect me. People believed that,” said the Senator. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared William Kinoti of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party the Rabai MP-elect.
