Solomon Gichira wants the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Wafula Chebukati, arrested and jailed for contempt of court.

Gachira who eyed to be president, was charged for allegedly trying to commit suicide. He was released on a Sh200,000 cash bail.

In a case filled at the High Court, Friday, Gichira stated that IEBC rejected his nomination papers.

He further accused the electoral body of failing to make a verdict within 36 hours as the court had directed on June 16.

Gachira submitted his nomination papers to the commission on June 19 but failed to meet the required number of signatures of his supporters. This led to the rejection of his candidature in the presidency race.

He has however challenged IEBC’s judgment saying the decision was made without any regard to the rules of natural justice.

“IEBC is the sole custodian of of the voter register that its officers purportedly used to verify my supporters and having already been found as having treated me unfairly, it is absolutely imperative its decision be verified through a production of the submitted signatures and the voter register to determine the accuracy of the IEBC decision,” Gachira said.

“The schedule furnished to me does not accurately indicate the supporters who are legally eligible to vote and a decision based on an inaccurate voter register cannot be a valid decision,” he added.

According to the presidential hopeful, he will be denied his constitutional right to seek the country’s top seat if the court fails to order verification for the electoral body’s unfair and biased decision.
