Youths in Garissa County have been urged to venture into crop farming as an alternative means of attaining economic empowerment instead of looking for unavailable white-collar jobs.
Speaking during his visit to several farms financed by the his government, County Governor Nathif Jama clarified that he is ready to support the youths interested in starting farming activities by giving them loans to start up the practice.
Jama expressed the necessity of the local youths to settle into farming as a full time job, stating that most of the foodstuffs consumed in the county are imported from the neighbouring counties, hence the need to change the trend and ensure Garissa County produces it is own agricultural products.
The governor also pledged that those venturing into farming would have their products offered value addition processes like processing by the county government, with the aim of boosting quality and ensuring the products fetch high prices.
