Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has pleaded with locals to endorse his second term in the August 8 general election.
Jama says that he needs another five year term to complete the development projects his administration has started.
Addressing to supporters in Garissa Town on Monday, Jama said that his administration has been able to fulfill 70 per cent of the development pledges it made in 2013 and needs another five years to complete the 30 per cent and initiate more projects.
According to Jama, his government has recorded massive development in infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, empowerment of marginalized groups and trade.
Jama observes that since 2013 his administration has been working with the national government on security.
He notes that security in Garissa has been stable in the last two years boosting the county’s economic activities especially business and trade.
According Jama, security was the major hurdle to the county’s economic development and that the national and county government interventions have seen the county record low crime rates.
“Security has been the major issue in Garissa and neighboring counties but in the last two years we have experienced a calm and secure environment courtesy of the national and county government,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
On infrastructure, Jama said that his government has expanded and renovated roads which have made movement of people and goods easier.
The Governor observes that Garissa is a cosmopolitan county and that his administration has been able to unite the communities and clans residing in the county. County.
On healthcare, Jama says that all hospitals and health centers are equipped with modern equipment and medicine. He says that mortality rates have reduced courtesy of the good medical care being offered by his government.
Jama says that his administration will be able to scale more development projects if he is re-elected.
The governor, who is seeking re-election on Wiper Party, wants locals to trust t him and endorse him for a second term.
“I will not disappoint locals if they give me another five years to complete what I started in 2013,” he said.
Jam is facing stiff competition in his re-election bid.
Former Permanent Secretary (PS), Ali Bunow Korane who is eyeing on jubilee Party ticket.
Korane has vowed to send Jama home accusing the governor of allegedly sidelining some clans and communities in the county on development.
Korane has the backing of Garissa Township MP Aden Duale who wants locals to vote Jama out.
Bashir Haji, who is Senator Yusuf Haji’s younger brother is also eyeing Jama’s seat.
Haji is contesting the seat on Amani National Congress (ANC) Party and has promised to give Jama and Korane a run for their money in the gubernatorial race.
