Jamaican musician Adidja Azim Palmer alias as Vybz Kartel has disowned Kenyan Gaza gang.
Through a TV host in Jamaica, the musician was reacting to an earlier story published in The Nairobian alleging that members of the Gaza gang in Kayole were looking at Kartel, currently in jail, as their god.
Kartel disowned the group and its beliefs, denying he is not God and that the youths have been misled by individuals intending to profit from their deeds.
He distanced himself from the gang just days after an unidentified Kenyan had sent voice notes to Jamaica's Souflo TV pointing out the gang’s worship of Kartel.
He also pointed out the article that had run inThe Nairobian highlighting their belief in him.
Responding on behalf of the artist, the TV host said: “I have a voice note from Kenya. I have been told of a gang in Kenya that worships Vybz Kartel as their god. The problem is this gang is also extremely violent and has been murdering people among other crimes”.
“He (Kartel) is more likely to tell you to stay in school and get education that would uplift your life from the conditions you are in,” the host added.
“Kartel does not support these things. This is not part of Kartel. Whoever is misguiding these youths should remember that music is very powerful, and what they are probably doing is that they are using Kartel’s powerful music to indoctrinate these guys.”
“Like you know a poor child in Nairobi they might be looking at say Teacher’s Pet (a TV series) and watching that show thinking ‘wow that is what a no-caring attitude could bring you like committing crime and murder, have a big mansion with a bunch of beautiful women’. They pick and choose and fight over him and all these propaganda they are using to achieve their agenda,” the host said.
