Traders at Jamhuri Market in Thika are appealing to the Kiambu County government to build them modern storage facilities for storing perishables.
Through their Chairman Anthony Mukiri, the traders have said that they have been incurring huge losses due to lack of storage facilities that can keep perishables ranging from fruits to vegetables in a proper way.
"Towards the end of last year when the El~Nino rains were at the peak, traders who deal with perishables experienced immeasurable losses merely because we don't have facilities that can cushion their products from rot and eventually going bad. This being the only market near the town centre needs to be fully equipped and modernised to reflect a good image of our town," Mukiri said.
He also stated that the market needs a facelift seeing that it has taken many years before it was last renovated.
"It has taken more than 10 years since substantial renovations were carried out on this market. We are requesting our MCA Mwangi Wamwangi who is aware of the market situation to lobby the county government to intervene and do something," he said.
Mukiri was speaking at the market on Tuesday during the market's officials’ weekly meeting.
