The Government of Japan through its embassy in Nairobi has committed Sh 8 million for the construction of a maternity wing at Ombeyi hospital in Kisumu. Ombeyi ward representative Joshua Auko has appealed to the county government of Kisumu to ensure Sh 5 million that was earlier allocated for the construction of the same wing is utilised as budgeted. He said the county government of Kisumu had allocated the funds earlier that were reflected in the current budget and the tender had been awarded. “The county of Kisumu allocated funds and they might want to withdraw since Japan government is offering to construct the same, however I want that money still used within the hospital,” he said. Speaking to the press after touring Ombeyi hospital with the Japanese ambassador to Kenya, Auko thanked the CBO for the effort. He said the county government should go ahead and put up the facility since the hospital needs further expansion owing to the high number of patients in the area. Auko alleged that since the county government heard that the government of Japan had stepped in there is little effort from the county to go ahead with the construction. “I will talk to the procurement officer to see where the project has ended because I can read some mischief in the implementation of that project by the county government,” he said.
