Speaking on Sunday at a prayer rally held at Okelo's home in Ahero, Nominated Senator Janet Ong'era revealed that Okelo had been denied the ticket despite having won the nominations.

"Since it's a prayer day, we apologise for having shortchanged you in the party nominations that you won. Now we're supporting you fully for the seat. Forget about what had happened during that time," said Ong'era.

Incumbent Nyando MP Fred Outa in absentia was tipped to be seeking the Kisumu Senatorial seat after rumour that sitting Senator Anyang Nyongo had declared his intent to unseat Governor Jack Ranguma.

Okelo lost to Outa in the 2013 ODM nomination before defecting to Ford Kenya where he lost with a small margin but contested the results in court, a case which is yet to be settled.

He has reassured his supporters of the intention to vie for the position on the Ford Kenya ticket against an ODM candidate.
