The Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (CEEC) has declared Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) the top public institution in energy management in Kenya.
The recognition was made recently during the 2016 Energy Management Award (EMA) at the Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi. JKUAT proved efficient in its energy policy, planning and implementation of various energy aspects and the adoption of energy saving innovations.
Receiving the award, JKUAT Energy Manager, Mr Anthony Gitahi said the university won the prestigious award because of its strategy to promote energy awareness amongst its community through capacity building and policy orientation.
“We have undertaken sensitisation sessions to orient both staff and students to the new paradigm. JKUAT has also developed an evaluation matrix to monitor consumption of various energy aspects like electricity, diesel, firewood and Liquid Petroleum Gas,” said Gitahi.
In addition to the energy policy, the JKUAT has also formed an advisory board to guide the implementation of various energy management projects at the university.
The Energy Management Award (EMA) is an award for all energy consumers geared at encouraging a culture of energy efficiency and conservation.
EMA recognises enterprises that have made major and sustainable gains in energy efficiency through the application of modern energy management principles and practices, and in the process made significant energy and cost reductions.
