Payments for the equipment will be in two instalments to make it easier for the students to pay and access the laptops for use in their studies.

Speaking during the welcome ceremony held at the university's main campus in Juja, Vice Chancellor Mabel Imbuga said the university management board has made the laptops specifications required for use across all programmes.

The students will access some units online as well as free of charge university subscribed e-books and e-journals among other academic materials from the library.

JKUAT has been declared the third best academic institution of higher learning in Kenya out of the 63 ranked Kenyan universities.

The university has remarkably improved its global ranking, moving 2,121 positions up to be placed 2,826 out of 21, 500 ranked higher education institutions globally by Webometrics in the quarter ending June 30 2014.

JKUAT is currently implementing an ambitious online visibility enhancement strategy that will guarantee more resources and information availed on its website, in line with its Strategic Plan of 2013-2017.

This trend is witnessed days after Kenyatta University issued over 2,000 tablets to its students in pursuit of e-learning and enhanced lecture-student interaction where students can learn without attending classes and submit their assignments online.
