Police in Juja are investigating circumstances under which a first year female student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) fell off from a hostel’s third floor and died on Saturday evening.
The teenage lady had reported to the institution barely a week ago. She died at the JKUAT Commons Hostels in Juja, Thika sub-county.
Area police boss Isaac Thuranira said his officers had launched investigations to ascertain the cause of the death.
“We want to ascertain whether she was thrown or she committed suicide,” Thuranira said.
The lady, who was identified as Ann Njoki, had been enrolled to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Financial Engineering.
Tedd Gatobu, a student leader who spoke to our reporter on phone, said it was sad to be hit by a tragedy in the first week of the semester.
He urged the students to be very vigilant when it comes to their health and also shun drug abuse as this would affect their wellbeing.
Gatobu cited an incident some years back where four students at the same institution were involved in an accident because of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kenyatta University mortuary.
