A men's hostel in Jomo Kenyatta University Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday, just about a week after the university was caught in a student riot.
The students started protesting again over what they termed poor response to the fire, ending up engaging the police in running battles.
The inferno that began a little past midday at Hall 6 men’s hostel located in the Juja main campus, lasted about an hour before the fire brigade arrived.
Kiambu county fire engine disaster and rescue team responded an hour later. ## The fire fighters struggled to keep the fast spreading fire under control, as students protested over an apparent delay in responding to the incident.
Police had to be called in to maintain order. No casualties were reported.
The cause of fire, at the largest hostel in the campus, is yet to be established.
