The emergence of greenhouse farming has become a hit among the youth and individuals have added a coat of colourful paint to the growth of agriculture in Bahati Constituency.

More youth who had shunned the enterprise, are now embracing it with vigour.

Patrick Maina, 23, from Bahati Ward, Wanyoro B Location is an example who has involved himself in the farming. Speaking at his farm on Wednesday, Maina said that he embraced agriculture after tarmacking for two years without getting a job.

“I returned to my dad who gave me a portion of land where I started farming with a seed capital of Sh10,000,” said Maina, a diploma nutritionist.

Maina said that he used the money to erect a 10 by 8 metres greenhouse with local materials.

“I then approached the Horticultural Crops Department Authority (HCDA) to get information about grafted varieties. I planted 1,000 seedlings of grafted variety of red giant oratia,” said Maina.

He said that the harvest was good where he managed to generate Sh170,000 from the sale of the tree tomatoes after nine months.

Maina has urged jobless youth to embrace agriculture as it is a profitable enterprise and he is ready to teach them good practices in tomato farming at no cost.

He revealed that he is in the process of expanding his business and start value addition to his products.
