Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has expressed concern over use of excessive force on University of Nairobi (UoN) students by GSU officers after they held demonstrations.
Deputy Party Leader Ali Hassan Joho on Tuesday condemned brutality of the GSU officers seen in a video circulating on social media of the students being flogged while lying on pavements.
Joho further alleged that female University students were sexually abused by the GSU officers, claims police spokesman Charles Owino has denied.
“Kenyans have been very disturbed by images that emerged from the University of Nairobi for much of the day. Images of police flogging helpless students and breaking into rooms, together with reports that scores of young women were raped by the same security officers are very disturbing."
They are totally unacceptable. Someone has to take responsibility and be punished,” said the Mombasa governor.
Joho said it was wrong to bully students who engaged in legitimate demonstrations.
Joho urged Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry to speed up investigations into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.
University of Nairobi students went on rampage after disputed election of Babu Owino as students’ union chairman.
The University has since been closed indefinitely following torching of hostels and destruction of property by the irate students.
