Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has strongly criticised county MCAs for resorting to exchange of blows to resolve their differences.
On Tuesday, members of Mombasa County Assembly engaged in fist-fights during a failed attempt to begin impeachment of speaker Thadius Rajwayi.
Wednesday, assembly proceedings turned chaotic after a section of MCAs maintained that no activities will go on at the assembly unless the original mace is produced.
The proceedings were to be conducted with a ‘wooden mace’ after the original one was destroyed during the Tuesday chaos.
However, some MCAs opposed and said it was against the Constitution.
Joho in a statement on Thursday said, “It was unfortunate to see elected leaders conduct house business in such unacceptable manner and contrary to the code of conduct on leadership and integrity.”
“Differences often arise but it is important as leaders that we conduct ourselves in a manner that depicts the distinguished role that we play in the society.”
The ODM governor urged the MCAs to set a good example to the electorate, who are only interested in service delivery and not side shows and theatrics.
“I therefore urge the Members of County Assembly to remember that they serve the interests of the people of Mombasa and should only focus on a progressive legislative agenda,” Joho said.
