Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has distanced himself from a car which was on Monday seized over drug trafficking claims.
The vehicle, with registration number KCH 883D, was nabbed on Monday following an operation in which seven suspected drug traffickers were nabbed with half a kilo of heroin and Sh45 million. The car was branded with Joho’s colours.Confirming the incident, regional police boss Larry Kieng said the owner of the car was yet to be identified, adding that police have launched investigations into the matter.“We are yet to verify the owner of the car with relevant authorities including KRA. We cannot conclude it belongs to Joho at this stage,” he said. In a telephone interview with Kenyans.co.ke shortly after the incident, Mombasa County communication director Richard Chacha said Joho is not the owner of the vehicle, adding that the Governor has no links to the suspects.“It has nothing to do with us, it is not our car. So many people have branded vehicles with our colours but they are not necessarily known to us, some are just our supporters,” said Chacha, as quoted by the daily.Chacha’s sentiments were reiterated by Joho’s campaign team manager, who accused the Jubilee administration of attempting taint the Governor’s image ahead of the August polls. The county boss has on several occasions being accused of drug trafficking, claims he has since denied.
