Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has blamed high youth unemployment in Mombasa on youth who he says have not made use of the revolving fund disbursed by the county government.
Joho said he was unhappy because youth have not applied for the money meant to help them start businesses.
“This is why we still record high cases of drug use. Rehabilitation centres are full and you wonder why. My government initiated a youth revolving fund but the money is still in the bank account idle,” he said while speaking in Jomvu when he toured the constituency on Tuesday.
He was in company of MPs Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Mishi Mboko (woman representative) and Jomvu MP Badi Twalib.
“When we built drug rehabilitation centres, we did not say youth should begin abusing drugs and end up in these centres. We will not tire in in our efforts to make Mombasa drug-free.”
He said in the 2017/2018 Financial Year, the county government will build an extra rehabilitation centre to admit youth abusing drugs.
Mombasa is among counties whose young people massively consume drugs.
Both the county and national governments are burning the mid-night oil to salvage youth who have immersed themselves in drug use in Mombasa.
The county is adversely affected because Mombasa port has for long been used an import zone for the drugs that mostly come from South America.
Drugs including cocaine worth billions of shillings have in the recent years been netted by security agencies keeping vigil at the port.
“My government has availed money for you. Apply for this money and do business. Stop wasting yourselves in drugs.”
