Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho has been accused of frustrating his opponents, in the race for the county's top job.

Nyali MP Hezron Awiti and businessman Sueiman Shahbal have indicated Joho is sabotaging their campaigns, by blocking them from erecting campaign billboards in the town.

Awiti who decamped from Nasa's Wiper Democratic Movement, is vying on a Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP) ticket, while Shahbal is vying on a Jubilee Party ticket.

According to the duo, Joho has instructed agents not to erect campaign materials of his opponents anywhere in the coastal county.

Awiti said he paid Sh300,920 as down payment for a total sum of Sh1.8 million, for the erection of campaign billboards, by Magnate Ventures Ltd and Adsites Ltd, only for the cheque to be returned to him by county authorities.

They accused him of deploying dictatorship under his leadership, saying "Mombasa is not a Sultanate and we shall therefore not allow old school tactics."

Awiti who is optimistic of sending Joho home, accused the ODM governor of bribing billboard companies in the county, so as not to attend to his opponents. He now wants the anti-graft agency, EACC, to investigate the matter.
