Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has claimed that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho hired a group of youth to disrupt his meeting over the weekend.
This comes after police officers in Mombasa were compelled to shoot in the air to disperse a section of rowdy youth who wanted to disrupt a meeting hosted by Awiti, who is eyeing the gubernatorial seat in the next general election.
The chaos erupted when a section of youth chanting pro-Joho slogans began pelting stones at the crowd, a few minutes after Awiti started addressing the public, forcing Nyali police officers to fire in the air to calm them down.
The lawmaker alleged that the youth had been hired by Joho, an act he termed as a “show of cowardice perpetrated by people who feared defeat in the general election”.
“Let him know I will not be scared by the threats, if Joho wants fair competition, let us meet at the ballot and not use youth to disrupt peaceful meetings,” said Awiti, as quoted by Mediamax.
“The governor's race for Mombasa County will not be about political parties, but partnerships between the various communities living and working in the county,” he added.
