Governor Hassan Joho on Friday night expressed happiness after police, according to him, apologised to him following his arrest.
Joho, who alongside MPs Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni) and Abdulswamad Nassir (Mvita) had been arrested and detained at Urban Police Station was freed about one hour after being detained at Urban Police Station in Mombasa.
The three are said to have gone to the police station to seek for the release of Mr Joho's aide who had been arrested and detained at the facility.
There was a tense atmosphere in Mombasa following revelations that the ODM Deputy Party leader had been arrested.
"Rashid Bedzimba, Abdulswamad Nassir, Suleiman Dori and I were placed under arrest for alleged obstruction of arrest charges at the Coast Police Provincial Headquarters," Joho posted on his official Facebook page after being released.
"We firmly stood by our rights and questioned the illegal and frivolous charges under which we were placed under arrest. Later on, we were released by the PCIO after he apologised and claimed the arresting officer acted independently and received no such orders to arrest us."
"We will not relent in the fight for justice of our people nor deviate from the cause."
Joho is expected to steer opposition campaigns at the Coast region and is increasingly becoming a stumbling block to Jubilee's attempts to harvest votes in the region.
