Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said his government has a detailed plan that supports the tourism sector in Mombasa.
Joho who spoke to tourism stakeholders on Wednesday said contrary to reports that his administration does not support the revival of the sector, he was committed to ensuring the industry thrives so that local are employed.
“I thank players in the tourism sector for their contribution in the growth of our county,” he said when he met the sector’s stakeholders in Mombasa.
“I will not spare any effort to ensure that the sector thrives and Mombasa regains its position as a leading tourist destination and choice for foreign and local visitors.”
On Monday Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala accused the county chief of paying no attention to reviving the sector.
Balala accused Joho’s administration of ignoring garbage collection which he said had negatively affected the industry’s development.
The CS said although Mombasa is the country’s resort hub, the filth in the town that borders the Indian Ocean presents a major concern to both local and international visitors.
“Rotting garbage in Mombasa is hampering the government’s efforts to revive tourism in this popular destination,” Balala said Monday, calling on the county government to address the ongoing garbage collection crisis.
Tourism sector players have in the past said the county government should play its part by cleaning the town ahead the 2017 tourism peak season.
“I have reiterated my resolve to initiate relevant legislation to streamline the sector and this I will do in consultation with stakeholders,” Joho said.
